Knock, Knock – My 10 Favorite Woodpeckers

Woodpeckers are an interesting household. They bang away at bushes with their beaks, with out knocking themselves foolish. They excavate nest holes, which later grow to be houses for different birds and small mammals, making them a keystone species. There are 22 species of woodpeckers within the US and Canada. I’ve seen 21 of them. Right here, I share my favourites.

  1. The Acorn Woodpecker is discovered within the Western US. This clown-faced woodpecker lives in colonies. They feed on acorns, harvesting them and storing them in holes in useless bushes. Though, I’ve seen these spectacular granaries in phone poles, too.

Pink-headed Woodpecker

2. The Pink-headed Woodpecker is a chic fowl. It’s arrayed in purple, white and black, with huge, white wing patches. They’re arduous to seek out in Toronto and a uncommon deal with to see.

Lewis’s Woodpecker

3. The colouring of the Lewis’s Woodpecker is uncommon for a North American woodpecker, as a result of most have some mixture of purple, black and white. They’ve an oily-green again, purple face, pink stomach, and silver-gray collar. Their feeding habits are uncommon for a woodpecker, too. They fly out and hawk for bugs.

White-headed Woodpecker, male

4. I noticed my lifer White-headed Woodpecker within the San Diego, California space. Our information had taken us to a probable spot. My husband requested what the fowl appeared like. When the information described it, my husband then requested if it was that fowl on a close-by tree. He had discovered a feminine, who was feeding her fledgling.

5. The Pink-bellied Woodpecker (a male is pictured on the prime of this text) was once uncommon in Southern Ontario. Now, it’s present in practically each ravine and park, as a consequence of international warming. They nest in our close by park.

6. The Downy Woodpecker is a cute, little fowl. They’ll grow to be fairly tame and can land in your hand, to just accept seeds.

7. The Pink-cockaded Woodpecker is a uncommon fowl, discovered within the Southeastern US. Native birders helped us discover it in SW Florida. You have to be close to their roost tree, early within the morning or late within the day. As soon as they go away it within the morning, they are going to roam via their territory.

Arizona Woodpecker, male

8. The Arizona Woodpecker is a brown woodpecker. It may be present in southern Arizona, close to the Mexican border.

Northern Flicker, male

9. The Northern Flicker is a fowl with too many area marks. Our flicker within the east, which is the yellow-shafted kind, has a black collar, noticed breast, yellow color within the feather shafts of its wings, and a white rump. This woodpecker confuses many new birders. Like many different woodpeckers, they prefer to drum on homes or on their metallic siding. We as soon as had a flicker drumming on our roof. It appeared like a building zone’s pile driver.

10. The Pileated Woodpecker is our largest woodpecker. Our daughter noticed one fly by and stated she thought it was a pterodactyl. I’ve watched a Pileated work on a tree. It appeared like somebody was utilizing a hatchet.

Subsequent time you might be strolling within the woods, pay attention for the sound of knocking and also you’ll absolutely discover a woodpecker.
